This interview will be broken into soundbites and gossip headlines within the margins of film culture. They will latch onto Vincent Gallo’s attacks on Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson, Spike Jonze, Sofia Coppola, Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Soderbergh and others.
Just like any other interview with Gallo, they will ignore the other parts. The parts that express a strong work ethic, an observant and sensitive view as a filmmaker, and anecdotes about his heroes that are filled with insight and unguarded reverence.
As vicious or silly as they might seem, Gallo’s arguments are never without conviction. It should also be reminded that they come from from one of the finest contemporary American directors. An actor, musician, and filmmaker who has made two of the most delicate, emotionally sincere, accomplished films of the last twenty years…. with a third one we may never even see.
